How public holidays work in Pakistan.

Set by the Cabinet Division

The federal government publishes the year's public holidays in January. It confirms each Islamic holiday in a notification closer to the day.

Islamic holidays follow the moon

Eid, Ashura and Eid Milad-un-Nabi depend on the moon. The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee sights it, so these dates can move by a day.

Five-day and six-day weeks

Each federal holiday notification covers offices on both five-day and six-day weeks. Banks follow the State Bank's own list of bank holidays.

Provinces and optional holidays

Provinces sometimes add local holidays. The yearly list also has optional holidays for some communities, like 26 December for Christians.
